How many electricity providers can I choose from in Texas?

There are 40+ licensed retail electricity providers (REPs) in Texas. We currently track 16 providers with 349+ active plans on this page. The number of providers available to you depends on your TDU territory — most ZIP codes have access to at least 20 providers.

Which electricity provider has the cheapest rates right now?

Rates change frequently as providers adjust pricing. Right now the lowest rate we're tracking is 7.8¢/kWh. Click into any provider page to see their full plan lineup across all TDU territories, sorted from cheapest to most expensive.

How do I choose the right electricity provider?

Start by comparing rates at your usage level — most households use around 1,000 kWh per month. Then look beyond the headline rate: check contract length, early termination fees, renewable energy content, and customer reviews. Providers with higher ratings and more plans tend to offer better flexibility.

What is the difference between a big provider and a smaller one?

Larger providers like TXU Energy, Reliant, and Direct Energy typically have more plan options, established customer service, and brand recognition. Smaller providers like Frontier Utilities, Chariot Energy, or Rhythm Energy often compete on price and may specialize in renewables or specific contract structures. Both are regulated by the PUC of Texas and deliver power through the same grid.

Can I switch providers without losing power?

Yes. Switching providers does not cause any service interruption. Your local TDU continues delivering electricity regardless of which provider you choose. The switch typically completes within 1–3 business days, and your new provider handles the entire process.

Do providers charge cancellation fees?

Most fixed-rate plans include an early termination fee (ETF), typically $50–$200 depending on the provider and contract length. Variable-rate and month-to-month plans usually have no ETF, giving you flexibility to switch anytime. Each plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) lists the exact fee.

Which providers offer 100% renewable energy plans?

Several providers on this page offer plans backed by 100% renewable energy, including Chariot Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Rhythm Energy, and others. Look for the "100% Green" tag on individual plan listings. Check the EFL to confirm the renewable energy percentage.

Why does the same provider show different rates in different areas?

Each TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) charges different delivery fees that are passed through to your bill. So the same plan from the same provider can cost several cents more or less per kWh depending on whether you're in Oncor (Dallas–Fort Worth), CenterPoint (Houston), AEP Texas, or TNMP territory.

How are providers listed and ranked on this page?

Providers are listed alphabetically by default but can be sorted by number of plans or average rate. The data is sourced from the ElectricChoice marketplace and updated multiple times daily. Every provider shown holds an active PUC license and offers plans in at least one Texas TDU territory.

Are all providers on this page PUC-licensed?

Yes. Every provider listed here holds an active retail electric provider (REP) certificate issued by the Public Utility Commission of Texas. Their PUC license number is shown on each provider's detail page. You can verify any provider's license at the PUC's website.
